How can we have a more energy-efficient Long Island? Read below to learn what these companies are doing to help conserve energy and to raise environmental awareness among their consumers.

When LIPA took over LILCO 10 years ago, oil cost $14 a barrel. Today, oil is close to $140 a barrel — over a 900 percent increase. Natural gas has increased nearly 500 percent. In this same period, electric use per household on Long Island has increased nearly 20 percent. We must become more energy efficient. Governor Paterson and I recently announced the largest solar energy project in the state seeking 50 megawatts of solar energy, enough to power 6,500 homes. We’ve also added 325 gigawatt-hours annually of renewable hydro and landfill gas energy. Repowering older generating facilities is another priority. Further, LIPA recently announced Efficiency Long Island, an ambitious efficiency program that will help lower bills and conserve energy.— Kevin S. Law, President and CEO, LIPA

You’ll learn how lifestyle choices (both energy- and non-energy-related) and simple actions can have a large impact on the environment. You can even adopt a virtual polar bear cub and take care of it through games that increase the bear’s happiness, health and friendship with the user. You can explore actions that have either a good or bad impact on the environment, or compare the carbon outputs of various actions such as eating one cheeseburger versus planting one tree. Users can also pledge to take action on any item they wish. Going green with National Grid is fun.
